Advanced Clinical Consultation for DID Cases
In this roundtable discussion, participants will be encouraged to articulate the clinical challenges and potential pitfalls they are facing in their work with clients who have been diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder. The presenter will offer creative strategies and solutions based on her work with over 40 DID clients. As we process various cases, we can address some of the more common therapy dilemmas including: how to work with alters who refuse to integrate; managing alters who hold rage; the constant testing of boundaries by parts of the system; how to negotiate with alters who self-harm; helping clients to increase executive control while decreasing switching; and life after integration. We will also identify and process the counter-transferential dynamics that can inadvertently trigger clinicians or undermine their efficacy. Role plays, videos, and demonstrations will be incorporated into the training. Participants should already have experience working with DID, and come prepared to share a brief clinical summary and specific questions. Since this information will be shared with other clinicians in the group, please do not divulge any identifying information that would breach client confidentiality. Participants are asked to e-mail this material to the presenter, no later than one week before the training. In this way, less time will be spent “presenting” cases and more time can be given to problem-solving!

- Identify at least strategies designed to manage “uncooperative alters” who may hold anger or self-harm.
- Describe how internal safety can be enhanced within the system.
- Identify at least three counter-transferential responses that can impede the therapy process.
