It’s Much More than the Food: The Intimate Relationship Between Personality Traits and People with Eating Disorders
Working with the eating disorder population is extremely challenging, to say the least, which is why many clinicians won’t accept them as clients. They are well known to be “bull headed”, strong-willed, and highly resistant to most change. By having a better understanding of these basic personality traits, the important role they play in the disorder, and learning to read the many red flags that are given, each clinician will gain a sense of empowerment and confidence when treating eating disordered clients in the future.
In this workshop you will learn about all of the typical personality traits found in people with an eating disorder. Each trait will be closely examined and detailed examples will be given along with case scenarios. Included in the presentation will be some new tools, “tricks of the trade” so to speak, that will enable you to have a better connection with your clients, avoid burnout, and be able to teach them some new coping skills.
Learning Objectives:
- Clearly define the personality traits common in those with all eating disorders: bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.
- Develop a better understanding about how these traits “help” and “harm” your client.\Identify at least 3 of the most common mistakes that therapists make when working with this population.
- Learn new strategies that can be successfully used by the therapist when helping your client manage their personality traits in a productive and positive way.
