What the “I” sees: Understanding and Managing the Narcissistic Personality

One of the most frustrating clients for mental health professionals is the narcissist. Characterized by pervasive grandiosity, lack of empathy, and a need for constant adulation, the narcissist views others as mere objects who exist to serve his or her material or psychological needs. Because narcissists are often charmers and master manipulators, even clinicians can be initially “taken” by their allure. Narcissists do not use language as a means of social exchange, but rather as a tool to manipulate, capture, control, and hurt others. People who find themselves in the crosshairs or the wake of the narcissist often feel stressed, confused, and victimized. By co-opting others as props for his or her emotional discharges, the narcissist can literally drive other people crazy, or at the very least, question their own sanity.

As a family and business strategist, Dr. Daniel Lerner has effectively integrated his background in clinical psychology with experience in the corporate world to successfully coach numerous clients who must contend with narcissists in a variety of social, familial, and vocational contexts. This full day workshop will employ case vignettes, role-plays, and well-placed humor as a means of imparting a practical, easy-to-learn method for effectively managing the narcissistic personality.
