The Social Atom: Using Psychodrama to Explore Interpersonal Relationships – Level II
The Social Atom is a relational map, which can either be done on paper in art form or in action, where a person is asked to create a “living” diagram of persons to whom she or he has important relationships. The person places him or herself at the center, or nucleus of the atom and the relative importance of significant relationships are shown by their closeness to or distance from the center, by size, or other visual means. Relationships include those that are mutually positive, negative or mixed. The social atom can be used both as a tool for investigation, to promote self-awareness, or as a springboard for change. This modality offers clients creative ways to express and explore meaningful relationships in their lives, and provides the opportunity to re-story, through art and movement, the cognitions and affect that accompany these relationships.
Participants in this workshop will learn and practice this powerful and creative method in spiral 3 dimensional forms to explore and resolve early issues then return to the present using the Atom for reconstruction and role training.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe how the “social atom” can be used as a psychodramatic tool for diagnosing and treating the quality of interpersonal relationships
- Learn how to use the “social atom” in session with clients to help them explore emotional and physical distance and closeness in their relationships
- Implement the social atom technique to help clients resolve family of origin relationship dynamics through reconstruction and role training
