Helping Trauma Survivors Re-Claim A Sense of Their Spirituality

Spirituality is increasingly a topic of discussion and study as it relates to health and a sense of meaning in life.  Less attention has been focused on damaged spirituality and its possible cognitive, emotional and psychological implications.  This workshop will provide a forum for exploring this critical issue.  The establishment of a functional and comprehensive definition of spirituality will lay the necessary groundwork for the workshop.  Through presentation and active discussion participants will be provided a model for understanding spirituality’s dynamic development and the ways it can be disrupted and/or damaged by the experience of traumatic events.

We will identify the common distortions that are representative of spiritual damage and process the potential short and long-term implications of a damaged/disrupted sense of spirituality.  Participants will learn how to view these issues within the context of assessment and intervention options.  We will also address the ways in which an enhanced sense of spirituality can assist in a trauma survivor’s recovery and healing, as we learn to work with the natural ambivalence and resistances that emerge for survivors who feel a sense of spiritual betrayal.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and describe a framework for understanding the process of spiritual development.
  • Learn a framework for understanding how the process of spiritual development can be damaged through trauma.
  • Identify six common distortions that are representative of spiritual damage.
  • Describe a framework for evaluation and response to spiritual damage.
